Drop Side Cribs Updates

Alright, alright... we've ALL heard about the Drop Side Crib recalls and the recent CPSC bans on the crazy things.  But I wanted to share a few resources, thoughts and ideas on the subject.

#1 - Effective June 28, 2011 NO DROP SIDE CRIB (recalled or not) can be sold in retail or resale!

Technically, non-recalled drop-sides CAN be sold through resale until this deadline.  Of course, there's a strong reason why the CPSC has banned drop-sides, so we urge you all to stop the resale ASAP!
For details, go to: The New Crib Standard: Questions and Answers

#2 - Drop Side Cribs CAN still be used as toddler beds

If they come with the correct conversion kit. (per a call to the CPSC.gov)

#3 - Repurposing of Cribs is Growing and We LOVE IT!

JBF is pioneering a Buy-Back program to help prevent these cribs from going to waste.  From JBF of Columbia, MO - "We'll do what we do best -- we will do our best to repurpose them (maybe a toy train, crafting wall or a pot rack will become of them), we'll salvage the hardware to recycle....and anything left over will be disposed of in a safe manner."  Check out the details of the JBF program here.

I think you might have missed what a big deal this is. It doesn't just apply to drop side cribs. ALL old cribs can't be sold, resold, or given away unless they have been certified to the new standards. Since it is highly unlikely that manufacturers are
going to spend money certifying cribs, except the models that they plan to have on the shelves after the 27th of May, this is going to mean a ban on selling all old cribs. It will also mean that child care centers and places of public accommodation will have
to replace all old cribs by December 28, 2012.

I understand the problems with drop-sided cribs, but we adjusted the mattress to the lowest position for our grand baby, and it came to about her nipple line when she was standing. She climbed (or fell) out before she was 10 months old. I'm not sure that's
any safer.
